My homepage is definitely a bad landing page, it’s no wonder I’ve been getting lots of visitors but zero conversion. I should start working on it right away.

This is really useful and a good guide to get this right.
I would always use the following as a guide line.

• Search term to be placed clearly in top left corner
• Clear call to action (phone number + email)
• Trust indicators on the right hand side (testimonials + memberships)
• Keep them on the page (only one link to home page placed at the bottom)
• Use images
• Keep text focussed and to the point (climb inside the mind of the searcher)
• Create two versions to test effectiveness
• Page to fit in the window without the need to scroll

I agree with the above comment about the only way to gauge if a landing page is good/bad is based on the conversion rate. Landing pages are like brochures, if they don’t have a clear point (call to action) than they are ineffective and might even give a bad impression on the website.
