As I predicted, Microsoft put in an offer to buy Yahoo today for 44.6 billion. While it’s not a done deal yet, Yahoo is considering it and if they are smart they will take it. What does this mean for the search world? That remains to be seen, but if I were Google I would be VERY nervous. If any company is powerful enough to take down the Google juggernaut it is Microsoft. Combine Microsoft with Yahoo and you have a market share grabbing machine. I think this merger would be an GREAT thing for search marketers. If Yahoosoft could grab 50% of search in 2 years think of the possibilities for search marketers. Think MSN conversion rates with 3 times the current volume. Should be interesting to see how this plays out…

Yeah I was excited to see Yahoo issue an official statement saying they were ‘considering the best options for future development etc etc’, so this could be sweet.
I think many people would love to see google get knocked off their high horse – including ME!
How exactly do you think that Microsoft’s conversion levels scale over to Yahoo’s traffic/marketshare?
Andrew- I don’t know, purely speculating at this point. But Yahoo and MSN conversions have always been better for us now than Google, so why wouldn’t we believe a combined Yahoo/MSN be the same.
Why do you believe that the MSN conversion rates will be reflected on current Yahoo search properties?
So which one of their lousy PPC platforms will we end up having to use?
So… two big corporations only? If we go by the ‘browser wars’, time for Mozilla.
finally the time has come.. though I’m not in favour to MS but in this issue I would rather like Google to some qualified competitor who can shake him a bit.. no more monopolizing the market..

Competition is always great but I doubt that G’s position will be in danger in the near future.
Alan Johnson
I have to agree with Alan. After all, combining the two into one will not create an uber super search engine that solves all the users problems. Any growth in search market share will likely be minimal.
After all, how many users (outside of our industry) do you know that use IE for their browser with the default homepage setting of MSN.com STILL on and that STILL type in Google.com to do their search? You would likely be surprised by the number if you surveyed your family and friends.
At the most basic level, the perception of the average Joe/Jane consumer is this:
Yahoo = Mail and entertainment news. (Buzz)
MSN/Live = Start Page, with news channels, (MSNBC)
Google = Search (period)
Personally, I think Google’s biggest threat to it’s dominance is situations such as the “$75,000 Google Slap”, where it looses advertisers and ultimately those advertisers as searchers.

Am I the only one waiting for this to happen? sure not
Personally, I see this as a bad thing…at least, something to watch very, very closely. If we want the internet to remain “the people’s” medium, we should think competition…at all times. The less the number of big players, the greater the ability to TOTALLY control the marketplace. Now that there are evermore small businesses taking their turn at trying to launch a business online, the playing field is lush, rich and full of new business whom are newbies and willing to spend a little cash to try and carve out a piece of market share for themselves! And…when Google does what it does, it usually benefits my business…so Yay, Google! Without sufficient competition in the Search Engine business, the internet will more than likely become another media controlled by the very few, very wealthy minority, while the rest of us find ourselves, AGAIN, without a marketing avenue that is affordable to the “little guy”. So…think twice before you wish for Google or Yahoo to be swallowed up any time soon. They provide a needed service with a young “think tank” kind of mentality that, while I appreciate Microsoft’s business acumen, continues to be innovative, surprising, and helps make the internet what it is supposed to be…The People’s Communication Tool.
I think this will be a good merger. from what i know yahoo will do the marketing and microsoft will handle the other side. I think it will help compete with Google.
