I think all of us in the Internet marketing/Webmaster/SEO world get caught up in thinking how important our industry is. To us, it seems like a huge space to be in right now. It’s tempting for the new person starting out to focus on other websmasters as a target niche. But sometimes you have to take a step back and realize, this is a pretty small market overall.
I saw an interview on some financial channel the other day talking about the energy industry. They were talking about one company in general and said it was 10x the size of Google as far as revenue and market cap. 10 times! Even more amazing was that the emerging energy sectors is expected to spawn 20-30 new Google sized companies in the next 10 years. Imagine the opportunities if you can find some way to tap into these emerging companies.
To me the ideal situation for me is to use your webmaster/seo/sem skills, not in our own market, but in one of these huge markets. First and foremost, your customer base is enormous. Secondly, your skills can be worth much more to companies not familiar with the value of our skill sets. Third, you are dealing with companies that have gynormous budgets, not cheap 1 man operations like most webmasters.
